Hampton Roads Transit offers free rides on Earth Day

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has announced free fares for Earth Day, April 22, covering all bus, light rail, ferry, paratransit, and OnDemand ridesharing services. Residents can explore public transit options without any cost and plan their trip through HRT’s system map.

Members of HRT’s governing board, the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads, will meet the public in their respective cities on round-trip rides to discuss the role of public transit in local communities. The schedule is as follows:

In Chesapeake, Councilman Les Smith will meet riders at 10:40 a.m. at Robert Hall Transfer Center for an 11 a.m. departure on Route 6, returning at 11:36 a.m.

Hampton will see Councilwoman Hope Harper meeting riders at 10:20 a.m. at the Hampton Transit Center. The departure is scheduled for 10:47 a.m. on Route 109, with a return by 11:26 a.m.

In Newport News, Councilman Marcellus Harris III will be available at 10:20 a.m. at the Newport News Transit Center for a 10:45 a.m. ride on Route 106, coming back by 11:35 a.m.

For Norfolk, Councilwoman Mamie Johnson will meet with passengers at 10:15 a.m. at the Downtown Transit Center. The Route 4 ride concludes at 11:30 a.m.

Portsmouth's meeting point is at County and Crawford with HRT Commissioner Tony Goodwin starting at 10:10 a.m. The Route 45 journey will wrap up at 11:34 a.m.

In Virginia Beach, Councilwoman Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond will engage with riders at 10:20 a.m. at Tidewater Community College, returning on Route 26 by 11:24 a.m.
