Construction has commenced on a project by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to enhance traffic flow at the Interstate 264 (I-264) west off-ramp at Ballentine Boulevard (exit 12) in Norfolk. The $1.9 million project, contracted to Branscome, Inc. in February 2025, aims to alleviate ramp congestion on I-264 and improve traffic at the intersection involving interstate ramps, a city street, and a nearby light rail crossing.

The project will widen the existing westbound off-ramp from I-264, adding two right-turn lanes and a left-turn lane onto Ballentine Boulevard. Additionally, it includes signal modifications, drainage improvements, and the construction of a raised median island to better control turning movements.

Motorists should anticipate shoulder, lane, and ramp closures, as well as traffic shifts on the ramp during construction. The completion of the project is anticipated in early 2026, though the timeline is subject to weather conditions and scheduling.

Drivers are encouraged to use VDOT's free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the integrated Waze GPS app to access current road and travel conditions. VDOT’s website and mobile app provide details on construction, traffic, incidents, congestion, traffic cameras, and weather-related impacts.
