The City of Norfolk is observing Child Abuse Prevention Month this April and is encouraging the community to support the efforts dedicated to protecting children and families. On April 8, a symbolic event will take place at City Hall featuring the planting of blue and silver "Pinwheels for Prevention" to serve as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to prevent child abuse and neglect.
Norfolk Children’s Services and community partners are set to lead the event, with Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander, Ph.D., and various advocates scheduled to speak at 10 a.m. The pinwheel planting will directly follow their remarks.
As pointed out by event organizers, "Just like plants need good soil to grow, children need a nurturing environment to thrive mentally and physically." In support of this initiative, Norfolk’s Department of Human Services provides a variety of family support services aimed at ensuring the safety of children in the community.
Residents are encouraged to wear blue to join the demonstration of commitment to child safety. Information and resources on recognizing child abuse and neglect are available through Families Forward, and anyone who suspects abuse is urged to contact the Norfolk Child Abuse Hotline at (757) 664-6022 or 1-800 552-7096.
