Nauticus, in collaboration with the Regional Maritime Training System (RMTS), has announced the "Weld It, Build It, Sail It—A Reimagined Maritime Careers Festival." The event aims to highlight the career possibilities in Hampton Roads' maritime industry and is set for May 18 at Nauticus in Norfolk.
Stephen Kirkland, the executive director of Nauticus, explained, “With our new state-of-the-art exhibits and programming, Nauticus is doubling down on strengthening our region’s maritime workforce.” He added that the festival is a first for Nauticus, focusing on showcasing a variety of jobs and careers in the local maritime community. “We’ve created a festival that’s designed to be engaging, educational and tons of fun,” Kirkland stated.
The festival is presented by RMTS, which operates under the Hampton Roads Workforce Council (HRWC). It invites students, job seekers, families, military members, and the community to explore Hampton Roads’ maritime sector through new interactive exhibits and demonstrations at Nauticus.
Shawn Avery, the CEO and President of the Workforce Council, emphasized the intention to connect and inspire people through the event. Avery noted, "Our goal supporting the Nauticus Maritime career festival is to connect with people and showcase the thrilling and life-changing opportunities available within the maritime industry and skilled trades."
The maritime industry is crucial to the economy in Hampton Roads and currently needs more skilled workers. The festival aims to encourage widespread interest and engagement from all age groups.
The admission fee for this event will be $1 if purchased online in advance or $5 on the event day, with tickets available through the Nauticus website.
