On Saturday, August 19, the City of Chesapeake will conduct a training exercise during which public safety personnel and City staff members will simulate an active threat at City Hall. Here’s what this means for the community:
CLOSURES
All Municipal Center roads, as well as the Municipal Center Recycling Drop-off Site, will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Central Library and Great Bridge Community Center will be closed all day.
SIGHTS & SOUNDS
There will be heavy police and fire presence on-site that day, occasionally using their lights and sirens. While loud noises will also be part of the exercise itself, the activity will take place within City Hall, so we don’t anticipate those noises being audible outside of the Municipal Center.
The Chesapeake Emergency Management, Police, and Fire Departments regularly conduct training exercises that prepare first responders and City employees to help the community during an emergency. All City Departments have a role to play in emergency response, whether during the incident or afterwards during recovery. No matter what the emergency, preparedness is key.
