City of Norfolk issued the following announcement on Aug. 26
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. Norfolk Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind everyone that signing up for a library card is the first step toward academic success and lifelong learning.
Libraries transform lives and strengthen communities. From early literacy programs, emerging technology classes and virtual events, to free online databases, eBooks/Audiobooks, eMusic and streaming movies, Norfolk's neighborhood libraries play an essential role in helping patrons stay engaged and navigate the complexities of life.
As Norfolk Public Library continues to adapt and expand offerings to meet the diverse needs of the Norfolk community, we want everyone to reap the rewards of owning a library card. Signing up is easy ─ just visit any open library branch with your picture ID and proof of address to fill out an application. Do you have friends and family who don’t have library cards? Invite them to sign up during September!
This year, Marley Dias, founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks, author and executive producer, is taking on the role as honorary chair of Library Card Sign-Up Month. Dias will promote the value of libraries and encourage everyone to get their very own library card.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and local libraries work together in a national effort to ensure everyone signs up for their own library card.
