Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) and goCommute Commuter Solutions are preparing to mark Earth Day with a series of initiatives aimed at promoting public transit and community involvement throughout April. On April 22, HRT will offer free fares on all bus, light rail, ferry, Paratransit, and OnDemand ridesharing services. "HRT is excited to once again offer free travel to celebrate Earth Day as a way to thank our customers while encouraging new riders to leave their vehicles behind and try transit," said William E. Harrell, President and CEO.

In addition to the fare-free day, HRT is organizing community cleanups for those interested in volunteering. Community organizations, corporate groups, and civic leagues can participate by cleaning bus stops across Hampton Roads. Volunteers can sign up at gohrt.com/earthday/clean-up-form/ and choose their preferred locations or have one assigned by HRT.

The initiative also includes an "Am I Clean?" program where individuals can scan a QR code on bus stop signs to provide feedback on cleanliness anonymously. This information helps HRT allocate cleaning resources more effectively.

For those looking for a long-term commitment, the Adopt-a-Stop program allows organizations and companies to maintain transit stops by picking up litter and reporting issues such as graffiti or broken signage. Supplies like trash containers and safety vests are provided by HRT.

Community outreach events are scheduled throughout April where representatives from HRT and goCommute will be available to discuss transit solutions:

- Tour De ORF: Sunday, April 6 at Smartmouth Brewery in Norfolk

- Virginia Living Museum: Saturday, April 19 in Newport News

- Air Power Over Hampton Roads: Saturday-Sunday, April 26-27 at Langley Air Force Base

- Norfolk NATO Festival International Village: Saturday, April 19 at Town Point Park

GoCommute offers various commuter solutions including carpooling options that aim to reduce traffic congestion while providing guaranteed rides for emergencies.
