The City of Norfolk, in collaboration with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, is set to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a series of events. On January 19, a tribute will be held at the Harrison Opera House at 7 p.m., featuring musical performances by Earl Bynum & The Mount. Stephanie Sanders will perform on saxophone and Noah Lawson on double bass, under the direction of Everett McCorvey.

On January 20, the city will conduct its annual ceremony and march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and legacy. This event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Attucks Theatre located at 1010 Church St. The program titled "A Tale of Two Legends" will highlight both Dr. King and the historic Attucks Theatre itself, recognized as Norfolk's oldest entertainment venue. Kevin “The Moose” Anderson from Hampton University will lead this event. Afterward, attendees are invited to participate in a unity march to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument situated at 701 Church St.

Both events are open to the public without charge; however, advance registration is recommended but not required for attendance.

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 20, several city offices including libraries and recreation facilities will be closed. These closures extend to The Slover Library, Norfolk Animal Care Center, Norfolk Courthouse among others.

Residents requiring bulk waste collection for January 21 must submit requests before 3 p.m. on January 17 through various channels such as the MyNorfolk app or by contacting Norfolk Cares at (757) 664-6510.

Additionally, the SPSA Norfolk Transfer Station located at 3136 Woodland Ave., will operate from 8 a.m. to noon on January 20.
