During National Public Works Week, the City of Chesapeake takes a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and dedication of its Public Works Department. These men and women are integral to maintaining and improving the city's quality of life, regardless of seasonal conditions such as extreme cold or heat.

The Public Works Department is responsible for managing a variety of critical city services. These include trash collection, road maintenance, stormwater management, among others. The department encourages residents to show their appreciation when they encounter these public servants during the week.

The 2023 operational data for the Public Works Department includes:

- 5,570 pothole and street repairs

- 9,392 service requests addressed

- 185,665 feet of stormwater ditch cleared and cleaned

- 1,248 stormwater pipes and drains flushed

- 15,038 miles of streets swept

- 542 bridge repairs and inspections on more than 100 bridges

In terms of traffic operations:

- 1,241 traffic signals were serviced or repaired

- There were 212 emergency calls to repair traffic signals

- The city maintained 202 traffic signals in Chesapeake

- Thirty-eight miles of pavement markings were applied

- A total of 2,335 signs were repaired

- A crosswalk spanning 45,698 feet was installed

For waste management:

- The department serviced approximately 70,000 homes each week

- They responded to about 100,000 bulk trash pickup requests each year

- They collected and disposed of around135,000 tons of residential solid waste

- About 3,000 tons of recyclables were received at drop-off sites

- The Waste Management fleet drove an estimated total distance of about450,000 miles
