The City of Norfolk is inviting artists to propose designs for a public art project at Barraud Park. The park, which holds cultural and historical significance in the city, is currently undergoing a $4.5 million upgrade to enhance its accessibility and maintain its historical significance. The proposed art piece is intended to be a central feature of this renovated park.
Karen Rudd, Manager of Cultural Affairs, stated that the theme for the public art should encompass a series of artworks that highlight the park's role as a beacon of unity, resilience, and community connection. The artwork should reflect on the park's history of overcoming segregation and its lasting status as a hub for community activities. The art installation is expected to offer a reflective and healing experience to its visitors.
Proposals should include works of varying scale and medium, focusing on materials that are both durable and harmonious with the park's environment. Recommended materials include weather-resistant metal, stone, ceramics, and mixed media.
The budget allocated for this project is $115,000, and there is no fee to submit proposals. The deadline for applications is set for Monday, May 12. Interested artists can apply by following the instructions available on the Norfolk Arts website.
