A federal grand jury in Charlottesville, Virginia, has indicted a Shenandoah man on wire fraud charges for allegedly embezzling over $200,000 from his former employer. Vernon Fisher, 66, faces five counts of wire fraud according to court documents unsealed following his arrest.
The indictment alleges that between 2017 and 2021, Fisher was employed by Victim Company, a plastics company in Elkton, Virginia. As an accountant and controller, Fisher's responsibilities included filing taxes, running payroll, managing cash and bank deposits, and paying company bills.
Fisher is accused of orchestrating a multi-year scheme involving over 300 financial transactions to siphon more than $200,000 from Victim Company by linking his personal bank accounts to the company's accounts. He allegedly used these funds for personal expenses at high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Kay Jewelers, Macy's, and Nordstrom. Additionally, Fisher reportedly linked his PayPal and Cash App accounts to the company's accounts to transfer money.
If convicted, Fisher could face up to 20 years in federal prison.
U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh and Stanley M. Meador, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division announced the indictment. The FBI is investigating the case with Assistant U.S. Attorney Sally J. Sullivan prosecuting.
An indictment is merely an allegation; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
