Starting tonight, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are set to close several ramps along I-64 east in Norfolk as part of the construction for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Norfolk Segment. The closures are scheduled to take place overnight from February 6th to 9th, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. These closures include the I-64 east off-ramp to Granby Street (exit 276A), the I-64 east ramp from I-564 east, the I-64 east on-ramp from Patrol Road, and the I-64 east on-/off-ramps to/from Tidewater Drive north/south (exit 277A/B).
According to VDOT, signed detour routes will be in place to guide motorists during the closures. However, it is important to note that the construction work is subject to change depending on weather conditions and scheduling. Motorists are encouraged to visit the project site for updates on construction, traffic impacts, and to sign up for project updates.
The HREL Norfolk Segment is part of a larger project known as the Hampton Roads Express Lanes network. This network aims to create a continuous 45-mile stretch of Express Lanes on I-64 in both traffic directions, starting from east of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News and extending to the I-64/I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill Interchange in Chesapeake. The purpose of this network is to improve transportation in the region by reducing congestion and providing more travel options for motorists.
Before heading out on the roads, VDOT advises checking the latest traffic conditions using their free 511 mobile app. The app provides information on road conditions, traffic incidents, construction, congestion, and even access to traffic cameras and weather updates. Alternatively, motorists can visit 511Virginia.org or call 511 while in Virginia for the latest information.
As construction continues on the Hampton Roads Express Lanes network, periodic ramp closures will be necessary to ensure the project progresses smoothly. While these closures may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits of improved transportation and reduced congestion will ultimately outweigh the inconvenience.
