NORFOLK, Va. - The MacArthur Memorial, in collaboration with the Filipino American National Historical Society (Hampton Roads Chapter) and the Council of United Filipino Organizations of Tidewater, will be hosting an event on Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Philippine-American War. The highlight of the event will be the unveiling of a restored copy of Philippine General Emilio Aguinaldo's 1899 declaration of independence.
The restoration of this historic document was made possible through crowd-funding efforts from people around the world, after it was recognized as one of the Top 10 Endangered Artifacts in Virginia by the Virginia Association of Museums last year. The unveiling of the restored copy will serve as a testament to the significance and value of preserving and honoring historical artifacts.
In addition to the unveiling ceremony, the event will feature presentations from an international panel of scholars. These experts will provide insights into the war from both the perspectives of the U.S. Army and the Filipino people, shedding light on the shared experiences that have shaped the relationship between the American and Filipino communities.
"The Philippine-American War is truly a forgotten war," said an event organizer. "If the Spanish-American War was regarded by some contemporaries as a 'splendid little war,' the Philippine-American War was a devastating and costly war. It was also the start of a century of shared experience between the American and Filipino people."
The event will be held at the MacArthur Memorial Visitors Center, with doors opening at 9 a.m. and the program commencing at 10 a.m. Admission to the event is free, but attendees are encouraged to register in advance through the MacArthur Memorial website. This will ensure a smooth and organized experience for all participants.
For those interested in attending and wanting to learn more about the Philippine-American War and its historical significance, this event offers a unique opportunity to engage with scholars and experts in the field. By commemorating the 125th anniversary of the war, the MacArthur Memorial aims to raise awareness and promote a deeper understanding of this often overlooked chapter in history.
