The Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is set to present a free concert as part of its ongoing mission to engage and reflect the diverse communities in southeastern Virginia. The event, titled "commUNITY 2025," will be held on Sunday, February 2 at Norfolk State University's Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.
Known for pushing the boundaries of what an American orchestra can achieve, the VSO serves a home area with a population of 1.7 million people. It has gained national recognition through performances at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, as well as media coverage from outlets such as The New York Times and BBC Worldwide News.
As the largest performing arts organization in southeastern Virginia, VSO presents over 150 concerts annually for more than 100,000 attendees. Recent initiatives include health programs for individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia and inclusive concert environments for neurodiverse audiences. Since 2019, VSO has been acknowledged for its efforts to mirror regional ethnic and racial diversity within its membership and leadership.
Eric Jacobsen was appointed music director in 2021, aiming to broaden audience engagement through innovative programming. Norfolk native Thomas Wilkins also contributes as Principal Guest Conductor, supporting VSO's goal to foster community storytelling and dialogue.
The upcoming concert will feature performances by the U.S. Fleet Forces Band alongside local talents such as LaVoris Pace, Teens with a Purpose, Amandla Quartet, and Desmond Harrison. Attendees are encouraged to join this cultural celebration that highlights community diversity through music, dance, and spoken word.
Parking shuttles will be available for this annual event which unites individuals from various backgrounds.
