Water & Sewer Bill Update

Chesapeake water and sewer billing periods are running longer than usual, causing higher-than-usual bills for residents. The delay in billing is a result of the recent transition to a new rate structure and billing software, which required extra time to ensure the accuracy of nearly 71,000 accounts. Although the quality control tests revealed an accurate system, the process created a delay in releasing the bills. Normally, billing periods average around 60 days, but currently, they are running closer to 75 days. As a result, residents have been using more water during this extended billing period, leading to higher bills.

In order to rectify the situation, staff members have been working overtime to read meters and release bills. Additionally, two vacant meter reader positions are in the process of being filled. The City has also contracted staff from other departments and temporary agencies to assist the Public Utilities staff. This concerted effort aims to bring the billing periods back on track.

The City of Chesapeake understands that some residents may have concerns about their bills or may be struggling to pay. To address these issues, the Public Utilities Customer Service is available at 757-382-6352 during regular business hours. They are committed to working with individual customers, offering payment plans, and waiving penalties or interest as appropriate.

In addition to the delayed billing periods, residents should also be aware of the upcoming annual water/sewer rate increase of 2.9%. This increase, which will take effect on January 1, 2024, is necessary to accommodate the rising costs of providing quality water and sewer services.

For more information on the rate structure and other related details, residents can visit the City of Chesapeake's website.

As the City continues its efforts to resolve the billing issues and maintain the quality of water and sewer services, residents are encouraged to reach out for assistance and stay informed about any updates from the City.
