City Offices Close in Observance of Christmas and New Year’s Day

NORFOLK, Va. – The City of Norfolk has announced the closure of various government offices and facilities in observance of the upcoming Christmas and New Year's holidays. According to a recent statement, the closure dates include December 22 and 25 for Christmas, as well as January 1 for New Year's Day.

Among the affected locations are the city's government offices, libraries, The Slover, and recreation centers. Additionally, the closures will extend to the offices of the Commissioner of Revenue, City Treasurer, and Norfolk Courthouse. The General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts will also close early at noon on December 21. The MacArthur Memorial will follow suit and be closed from December 22 to 25.

Furthermore, the Norfolk Animal Care & Adoption Center (NACC) will be closed on December 24 and 25, as well as January 1. The revised schedule for trash and recycling collection during the holiday season has also been announced. On December 22, there will be no changes to the regular collection schedule. However, there will be no trash and recycling collections on December 25 and January 1.

For those in need of bulk waste collection, the city has provided specific dates for scheduling pickups. Bulk waste collection for December 22 and 26 should be scheduled by 3 p.m. on December 21. Similarly, bulk waste collection for January 2 should be scheduled by 3 p.m. on December 29. Residents can request bulk pickups through the MyNorfolk mobile app, the online portal, or by calling Norfolk Cares during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Furthermore, the city has outlined the procedure for disposing of holiday trees. From December 26 to January 26, residents can simply place natural or artificial trees, with all decorations removed, at the curb on their regular trash collection day. During this period, no bulk pickup requests are needed for tree disposal.

In addition, the SPSA Norfolk Transfer Station located at 3136 Woodland Ave. will remain open on December 23 and 30 from 8 a.m. to noon. As for street sweeping operations on December 22, they will proceed as scheduled. The city requests residents to remember to move their vehicles from the right-of-way to allow the sweepers full access to the curb line.

As the holiday season approaches, the City of Norfolk is ensuring that residents are informed of the closures and revised schedules for various services. The closures and modifications aim to accommodate the festive celebrations while maintaining the efficiency of essential services.
