Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL) is showering new and expecting parents with information and gifts at the Stork Storytime and Community Baby Shower, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library.

The free program is designed to help set families up for success with information about early literacy and the breadth of free resources available at the library and throughout the community. In addition to learning quick tips for setting up a reading routine and selecting books for their babies, parents and caregivers will receive a gift bag with new children’s books to start their home libraries, plus toys, diapers, wipes and more.

If you recently had or are expecting a baby, register online now to reserve your spot as guests of honor. Infants and older siblings are welcome.

“Our goal is to celebrate and support new parents and make them aware of free resources available in our community,” said Matt Haddox, youth services coordinator for Virginia Beach Public Library. “We also want to highlight the importance of reading to babies. Fostering a love of books and reading in young children helps build literacy skills that will prepare them for success in school and beyond.

”A variety of community partners will be on hand for the event, including Virginia Beach City Public Schools Pre-Kindergarten Program; Virginia Women, Infants & Children (WIC); Fort Story and Oceana Fleet and Family Support Centers and City of Virginia Beach Human Services Early Intervention and Infant Program.

Funding for the Stork Storytime and Community Baby Shower was provided by Virginia Beach Elks Lodge 2268.
