Norfolk, VA – Hampton Roads Transit is reducing the fare on all former Metro Area Express (MAX) routes. Effective July 1, 2023, the new adult fare will be $2.00 per ride, or $4.50 for an all-day pass, down from $4.00 and $7.50, respectively

In October, the MAX service was rebranded to 757 Express. The fare is being reduced to be consistent with the other routes under the 757 Express moniker. The affected routes include all 900-series routes – Routes 921, 960, 961, 964, 966, 967, 972 and 980.

“This move will simplify HRT’s fare structure, bringing all base fares to $2.00 regardless of mode,” said William Harrell, President and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit. “We believe this will not only save our customers money, but it will help our daily riders when it comes to budgeting monthly transportation costs and potentially attract new riders to the service.”

This change was included as part of a recent revision of the agency’s fare policy, which outlines the fare structure for each of its transit services. The updated policy was acknowledged by the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads during its regular meeting on June 22, 2023.

Discounted fares will be $1.00 one-way or $2.25 for an all-day pass and are available to adults aged 65 and over and persons with disabilities. Youth aged 17 and under still ride free with a fare-paying adult or a Student Freedom Pass.

HRT’s mission is to connect Hampton Roads with transportation solutions that are reliable, safe, efficient and sustainable. For more information on transit services, visit gohrt.com.
