Every year around this time we remind the community that fireworks are illegal in the City of Chesapeake. More fires are reported nationwide on July 4 than any other day of the year. Dry vegetation on the ground can easily catch fire and leaf-filled gutters are prime kindling for an errant bottle rocket or firework debris. And of course, physical harm such as burns and fractures are real concerns that can lead to life-long disfigurement and even death.
But it’s not just the obvious dangers that should give you pause before putting on a personal fireworks show. The noise of fireworks can be extremely stressful to those with PTSD and autism. You might live next door to a veteran who will struggle with the sounds of unexpected fireworks. An autistic child in your neighborhood could struggle to sleep the rest of the night after the noise and bright lights. Pets are also easily frightened by loud noises. A planned, professional firework display is much easier for those community members to tolerate because they know it’s coming and they can prepare themselves.
Please be considerate of your neighbors this year and leave the fireworks to the professionals. Chesapeake’s official fireworks display will take place on Monday, July 3 at City Park, with fireworks expected around 9:30 p.m.
