Vehicle trailer thefts are reportedly increasing, prompting authorities to offer guidance on how to protect property. The City of Chesapeake has provided several measures that individuals can take to safeguard their trailers.

Among the recommendations are parking trailers in well-lit areas and obtaining quality security cameras. Authorities also suggest etching the VIN or Serial Number on the trailer frame and installing well-hidden GPS or Air tags for tracking purposes.

Recording all VIN/Serial Numbers, License Plates, and descriptions of items inside the trailer is advised. Leaving vehicles attached to trailers is recommended to prevent unauthorized hitching by another vehicle.

To assist law enforcement in distinguishing stolen trailers, placing unique markings both inside and outside is suggested. Additionally, using a hitch lock and wheel lock can serve as deterrents against theft.

For further information, residents may contact the City of Chesapeake at 757-382-2489 or visit their office at 306 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322.
