The Attucks Theatre in Norfolk, Virginia, will host the "Arts at the Attucks" performance series this winter. This series offers free performances that highlight local cultural programming. The events aim to provide audiences of all ages with unique experiences in a historic venue.
The series begins with "Heart + Soul" by Ballet Virginia on February 23 at 5 p.m., celebrating Lorraine Graves, an African American ballerina from Norfolk. On March 7 at 6:30 p.m., TRS Kids Performing Arts will present "This Joint is Jumpin’," exploring African American music and culture from the Harlem Renaissance to jazz's golden age. "Afro MANIA: Ghana," a celebration of Ghanaian culture by the Tidewater African Cultural Alliance, will follow on March 8 at noon.
All performances are free and open to the public without requiring tickets or reservations. More information can be found at www.norfolk.gov/artsattheattucks. The series is supported by Norfolk Arts, Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Attucks Theatre was designed by African American architect Harvey Johnson and opened in 1919. Known as “The Apollo of the South,” it featured performers like Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington. Named after Crispus Attucks, it became a historic landmark in 1977 and reopened in 2004.
