NORFOLK, VA – June 1 marks the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. The City of Norfolk reminds everyone that now is the time to prepare – from knowing evacuation zones to protecting property.

Residents should know where they plan to evacuate and review the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s Know Your Zone program. Have a plan in place ahead of time for family and pets.

Subscribing to Norfolk Alert is a key method of receiving critical information quickly, including public safety and severe weather. Residents can sign up online. Important information is posted on the City’s website (norfolk.gov) and social media platforms.

Residents should also have their emergency supply kits prepared, including any necessary medications or items needed for seniors and pets. Make sure homes are ready to weather potential storms by checking the roof, shutters, and doors to ensure they're in good repair and able to withstand high winds.

One of the most important steps residents can take is obtaining flood insurance. Flood insurance, whether through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private carrier, allows individuals, businesses and communities to quickly and sufficiently recover after a flood. Most homeowner’s and renter’s insurance policies do not cover damage caused by floods. Norfolk participates in the NFIP, which means all residents are eligible for flood insurance, even if they don’t live in a high-risk flood zone. Flood insurance policies take a minimum of 30 days to go into effect.

Prior to a potential hurricane or tropical storm, homeowners and renters should document the contents in each room to assist in any potential insurance claims post-storm.

Disaster preparedness is a responsibility shared by all. Residents can find more information on how to prepare for hurricane season on the City’s website.
