The Virginia Beach History Museums will host a "Conversation with a Curator" presentation by History Before Us founder Frederick Murphy, who will discuss the process of documentary making, historical trauma and how community can engage in healing. The presentation is paired with a screening of the award-winning film "Sweet Home Alabama: A Chief and his Protégé."

The film explores the parallels between survival, perseverance, and unapologetic preservation. Joycelyn Davis, a descendant of Chief Charles Lewis (Clotilda), details her battle with cancer and how her enslaved ancestors' legacy of defying the odds validated her ability to conquer obstacles in the way. Joycelyn and Pastor Derek Tucker speak eloquently of their commitment to keep the rich history of Africatown, USA, relevant and accessible for generations to come.

This event will take place at the Lynnhaven Colonial Education Center, 4409 Wishart Road, on Thursday, May 18, at 6 p.m. It is the next in the "Conversation with a Curator" series, following previous presentations on the historic Thelaball family bible and Grace Sherwood, the "Witch of Pungo."

Admission is free, but advanced registration is encouraged. Ticket registration is through the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation ActiveNet system. If you do not already have an ActiveNet account, you will need to create your free account prior to purchasing tickets.
