It seems like I just posted about summer boredom, and now the summer months are slipping away and the time for back-to-school preparation is here. The rhythm of life continues. The school year ends, the summer begins, the summer ends, the school year begins with a flurry of busyness.
You can set the tone for a calm, organized, and positive start to the school year by being aware and planning ahead. Be attentive to what is needed physically, mentally, and emotionally to set your child up for a successful year.
- Make sure your child’s pediatrician checkups and immunizations are up to date.
- Check the school’s website for information on this year’s calendar and supply list.
- Adjust your child’s bedtime schedule and start getting them up at the time they will need to during the school year.
- Give your child tasks to do to prepare for the school year like trying on school clothes to see what still fits, setting up a space to do homework, or making a list of healthy after-school snacks.
- Give your child information. Be enthusiastic. What is the schedule going to be like? What school will they go to and who will their teacher be?
- If your child will be attending a new school, take a trip to the school and tour it if possible.
- Notice your child’s words and behavior as they explore feelings about going back to school. Your child may feel worried about the safety of the school based on recent events and school shootings. Whatever your child is feeling, be attentive and reassuring.
- Teach your child some calming techniques to use if they feel overwhelmed, such as taking a deep breath or thinking a happy thought.
- Remember, parents need to breathe, too. Now, more than ever, parents may have some anxiety about sending their kids to school. Talk to administrators at your child’s school if you are worried about safety.
