Women's Soccer defeats Division I Richmond 4-1 in spring scrimmage

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team defeated the Spiders from the University of Richmond 4-1 in a spring scrimmage at the Tassos Paphitis Soccer Complex on Friday evening. The scrimmage was the first time in program history, the Marlins have hosted a Division I program at Foster Field.

Though there were no official stats scored in the contest, the Marlins posted four goals against the Spiders.

The teams took the opening five minutes or so to settle in and get back into a rhythm after being off since November at the end of the 2021 fall season. Richmond controlled the possession of the ball a majority of the first half scored the only goal of the half in the sixth minute of the contest.

Virginia Wesleyan came out of the halftime break putting the pedal to the metal scoring four goals in the second 45 minutes of play. Just over two minutes into the resumption of play, Breacain McClenahan put a ball into the back of the net off a long ball from the top right corner of the goal box evening the score at one all. 

About six minutes later, Adrianna Gunther added another goal for the Marlins as she corralled a loose ball in the box to put it over keepers head giving the Marlins the first lead of the game, a lead that they never relinquished.

Both teams settled into a rhythm going back and forth over the next 20 minutes with neither team scoring. Just as the clock ticked under 20 minutes left in regulation, Emma Acanfora hit a chip shot over the keeper's head for the third Marlin goal of the game. 

The last goal of the game came off the foot of Alexis Miller as she took advantage of a pass the went awry from a Richmond defender back to the keeper.
