Marlin Field Hockey defeats Eastern Mennonite 4-3

Virginia Wesleyan College Athletics issued the following announcement on Oct. 13

The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team defeated the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. All four Marlin goals were scored by different players. 

GAME INFORMATION

Score: Virginia Wesleyan 4 - Eastern Mennonite 3

Records: Virginia Wesleyan 3-7, 1-3 | Eastern Mennonite 7-6, 0-3

Location: Birdsong Field | Virginia Beach, VA

FIRST HALF

  • The Marlins opened up the first quarter strong scoring three of their four goals in the opening 15 minutes. 
  • Shannon Gaffney put the ball in the back of the cage first off a pass from Emma Lankford in the sixth minute. 
  • A little over three minutes later the Marlins found goal number two as Catherine Dozier scored off a pass from Raquel Kelly. 
  • With only 28 seconds left in the opening quarter the Marlins put in a third goal as Lauren Hedspeth scored off the pass from Stephanie Hoke. 
  • Both teams went scoreless through the second quarter as VWU heading into the halftime break leading 3-0. 
SECOND HALF

  • Eastern Mennonite found some fire coming out of the halftime break scoring a pair of goals in the third quarter. 
  • The Royals knotted the score at three goals all in the 53rd minute in the fourth quarter. 
  • The Marlins were rewarded a penalty stroke with 6:43 remaining on the game clock and Lexie Thomas connected with the back right corner to give the VWU the 4-3 lead. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan managed to fend off Eastern Mennonite the remainder of the match to pick up their first ODAC win. 
KEY STATS

  • Raquel Kelly and Lauren Hedspeth both recorded four shots to lead the Marlins. 
  • Maura Bridges played all 60 minutes picking up the win (W: 1-3, 1-3) making four saves in the match while also giving up three goals.
