Cost of college went up for all students at Tidewater Community College

In-state tuition and fees rose 2.3 percent for 2018-19 at Tidewater Community College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Virginia residents paid $5,561 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $127 more than the $5,434 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 106.6 percent more than residents this year, or $11,489. Their price tag grew 1.1 percent from $11,362 in 2017-18.

About 82 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Virginia residents. About 4 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 74 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,507 students received grants or scholarships totaling $7.5 million and 645 students took out student loans totaling more than $2.8 million.

Including all undergraduates (20,941), 11,698 students used grants or scholarships totaling $38.6 million, and 4,740 students took out $23.6 million in federal student loans.
