A new sculpture commissioned by the Norfolk Public Art Program is set to be unveiled in Ocean View, Norfolk, Virginia. The unveiling ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 21, at 11 a.m. at 2100 E. Ocean View Ave., near 21st Bay St. and East Beach Dr.
The artwork, titled "The Family Vespa Riders," is created by Australian contemporary artists Gillie and Marc. It features a whimsical scene depicting a dog and rabbit family riding a red Vespa scooter. Standing at 12 feet tall, the sculpture aims to serve as a gateway entrance to the Ocean View community, embodying themes of exploration, togetherness, and shared adventures.
This installation marks the second collaboration between the Norfolk Public Art Program and Coastal VA Plein Air, a local nonprofit organization that provided funding for the purchase of the artwork. Their previous joint project was "Chryshellis," dedicated in Ocean View Beach Park in 2021.
Norfolk City Councilman Tommy Smigiel will be present for the event's big reveal. Afterward, attendees are invited to enjoy cookies and hot cocoa.
