Motorists traveling west on I-64 should prepare for a new traffic pattern at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) starting overnight on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The HRBT Expansion crews will shift both lanes of traffic onto a temporary bridge leading into the westbound tunnel to facilitate the next phase of construction for the new tunnel approaches at South Island.

Construction schedules may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. Updates and lane closure alerts are available at HRBTexpansion.org.

Drivers and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution near work zones. Before traveling, consider using VDOT’s free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the 511-integrated Waze GPS app for current road and travel conditions. The VDOT’s 511Virginia.org website and mobile app provide information about construction, traffic, incidents, congestion, access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts, and more.

The HRBT Expansion Project can be followed on social media @HRBTExpansion on X, HRBT Expansion Project on Facebook, and @HRBTExpansion on Instagram.
