Virginia Beach police make arrests following spring break weekend incident

On April 27, 2025, at 3:18 a.m., the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to a ShotSpotter alert and corresponding 9-1-1 calls reporting gunfire at the intersection of 23rd St. and Atlantic Ave. Officers confirmed shots had been fired but reported no injuries.

The ongoing investigation led to several arrests. Nashun Simmons, aged 23 from Hampton, Virginia, faces multiple charges including “Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm,” “Concealment of a Firearm (2nd Offense),” and “Use of a Machine Gun.”

Jay’nod Harvey, aged 22 from Newport News, Virginia, is charged with offenses such as “Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm” and “Unlawful Possession of an Extended Magazine.”

Mark Aranjo, aged 23 also from Hampton, Virginia, has been charged with “Possession of a Switch Activator” and “Use of a Machine Gun.”

VBPD seized three firearms during their investigation; one was equipped with both a trigger switch and an extended magazine.

“The charges mentioned in this press release are accusations,” it was noted that each arrested individual remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
