On June 4, 2025, at around 8:41 a.m., the Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizen Services (ECCS) received a report of an individual pointing a firearm at someone in the 4600 block of Honeygrove Road.

Officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) arrived at the location and found the suspect, identified as Shaun Marlar, an 18-year-old from Virginia Beach. Marlar was armed with a handgun. Despite commands to drop his weapon, Marlar aimed it at the officers, prompting them to discharge their firearms. Marlar was hit and taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.

A replica handgun was recovered at the scene. Marlar faces charges including two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and three counts of brandishing. The officers involved were not injured and have been placed on temporary Critical Incident Leave as per standard procedure.

The VBPD Detective Bureau is conducting one of two criminal investigations into this incident. Once completed, all evidence will be submitted to the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth Attorney (OCA) for review regarding legal compliance.

The OCA will also conduct its own independent investigation. After both criminal investigations are concluded, the VBPD Internal Affairs Unit will carry out an administrative review to assess adherence to department policy, procedure, and training.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the VBPD Detective Bureau at 757-385-4101 or Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or P3Tips.com.
