On July 18, 2025, at around 9:57 p.m., Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizen Services received a report of a shooting in the 5500 block of New Colony Drive. Upon arrival, officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department found a male victim on the roadway with an apparent gunshot wound. The officers provided life-saving efforts before the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Jamele Newby-Gibson, aged 20, from Virginia Beach.

An extensive investigation by detectives from the VBPD’s Homicide Unit led to identifying Nashaun Reid, aged 19, also from Virginia Beach, as the suspect. Reid has been taken into custody and charged with Second Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.

Chief Paul Neudigate praised his team for their swift actions: “I have to commend the work of our first responding zone officers and our detectives who diligently worked this case from the onset and were able to identify, apprehend, and charge the suspect in this offense within six hours from the time of the incident.” He added that removing a dangerous individual quickly demonstrates their dedication and professionalism.

It is important to note that these charges are accusations; Reid is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
