Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has announced that new state data indicate the division’s overall Standards of Learning (SOL) pass rates exceed Virginia’s averages across all subjects.

According to the Virginia Department of Education, SOL pass rate data released on August 27 show that VBCPS surpassed statewide results in every tested area. Divisionwide pass rates increased in writing, history, and science by two to four points from the previous year, while reading and math results remained consistent. End-of-course assessments reflected strong outcomes, with pass rates above 90% in Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, earth science, and reading. Several schools demonstrated notable improvement across grade levels and subjects.

While overall results reflect upward trends, VBCPS continues to prioritize further growth in reading and math. The division plans to use targeted supports, allocate resources, and strengthen instructional strategies to support student progress. These efforts aim to ensure all students, particularly English learners, African American students, and students with disabilities, have access to opportunities that advance academic achievement.

“These results reflect the hard work of our students, teachers, and school leaders, as well as the targeted supports we have put in place,” said Superintendent Dr. Donald Robertson Jr. “We are especially proud of the progress made by schools previously identified for improvement, which are now showing strong momentum across multiple content areas.”

VBCPS operates 86 fully accredited schools and serves approximately 65,550 students, making it the largest division in Hampton Roads. The district provides a one-to-one student-to-laptop ratio and reported $118 million in scholarships awarded to the class of 2024. Transportation services cover about 5.7 million miles each year. VBCPS emphasizes student achievement through academic programs that consistently perform above state and national averages. The division’s mission focuses on preparing students as lifelong learners and engaged citizens while its vision highlights maximizing student potential in a challenging and supportive environment.
