This week in South Tidewater history.

Born in Norfolk in June 18th 1963

Born on June 18, 1963, in Norfolk, Virginia, Bruce Smith became known for his success in professional football. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and played college football at Virginia Tech, where he earned national honors. In 1985, he was selected first overall in the NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Over 19 seasons, he recorded 200 career sacks, the most in NFL history. He played in four Super Bowls, earned 11 Pro Bowl selections, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009. After retiring, he returned to Virginia and began work in hotel development. He maintains ties to Norfolk through his church and community involvement.
