NORFOLK, Va. - The Slover Library Foundation is organizing an enlightening lecture on "Virginia Waterways and the Underground Railroad" with Dr. Cassandra L. Newby-Alexander. The lecture, part of the Brinkley Family Memorial Lecture Series, will take place on Thursday, Feb. 22, at The Slover in Norfolk.

Throughout history, enslaved Virginians have sought freedom. In their quest for emancipation, they found aid in Virginia's waterways, which became part of the Underground Railroad network. Norfolk, in particular, played a significant role as watermen helped escaped slaves, making it a haven for freedom seekers. Enslaved individuals served as conductors, while black and white sympathizers acted as station masters.

Dr. Newby-Alexander, an Endowed Professor of Virginia Black History and Culture at Norfolk State University, will share compelling narratives of individuals who sought freedom by navigating these waterways. Her lecture will shed light on the harsh realities of enslavement and the pursuit of freedom.

The event is open to the public and free of charge. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Books related to the topic will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture. Online registration is encouraged but not required.

The Slover Library Foundation aims to create an inclusive space where Hampton Roads residents can come together, share ideas, and learn from one another. The Slover Library hosts special events that entertain, educate, and provide opportunities for civil discourse on topics important to the region.

The Brinkley Family Memorial Lecture Series, named after Catherine "Kate" Lee Brinkley, a dedicated librarian at the City of Norfolk's Kirn Memorial Library, aims to educate the citizens of Norfolk through various services and programs offered by the Norfolk Public Library system. This lecture series, sponsored by Jane Batten, brings authors to Norfolk and fosters community discourse about current events. Book signings are available at all lectures and are free and open to the public.
