Construction has commenced on Phase 2 of the Mt. Pleasant Widening Project in Chesapeake, Virginia. This project aims to widen Mt. Pleasant Road from Cooper's Ditch Bridge to Centerville Turnpike by constructing a center turn lane. The construction is projected to continue until the fall of 2024, and travelers should anticipate various lane closures throughout this period.

To ensure that motorists are informed about the current lane closures, the City of Chesapeake is offering travel advisory text messages through Chesapeake Alert. By signing up for this service, individuals can stay up-to-date with any changes or disruptions to their travel routes. Additionally, the city has created a travel advisory account on Twitter/X called @ChesapeakeRoads, which will provide real-time updates on the project.

As of now, there are a few travel advisories that drivers should be aware of. The speed limit on Mt. Pleasant Road has been reduced to 35mph for the safety of both workers and motorists. Furthermore, there is a shoulder closure on the westbound section of Mt. Pleasant Road, stretching from Centerville Turnpike South to the railroad tracks adjacent to Butts Road Primary School. This closure will remain in effect until January 31.

During the construction period, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction between Butts Road Primary School and Centerville Turnpike. Motorists should plan their travel accordingly and expect delays in this area. Additionally, there may be potential flagging operations between Butts Road Primary School and Centerville Turnpike from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The City of Chesapeake advises residents and commuters to stay tuned for further updates as future lane closures are expected. It is crucial for drivers to remain informed about any changes in traffic patterns to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience.
