Representatives of the Republic of Korea will posthumously present the Order of Military Merit to the late U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur. Major General Kyungkoo Lee, Defense Attaché of the Republic of Korea to the United States, will present the medal to Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander on behalf of the MacArthur family. The medal will then become part of the MacArthur Memorial Collection in Norfolk.
The presentation ceremony will take place on General MacArthur's birthday and the 60th anniversary of the MacArthur Memorial. The event will kick off a yearlong celebration of the museum, archive, research, and education center in downtown Norfolk.
Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander, Major General Kyungkoo Lee, and Robert Garris, General Douglas MacArthur Foundation Board Chair, will be present at the ceremony.
The Order of Military Merit is being awarded to General Douglas MacArthur in recognition of his outstanding leadership and support for Korea and its citizens during the Korean War.
The ceremony will take place at the MacArthur Memorial, and members of the media are invited to cover the event. Media can park in the courtyard accessible from City Hall Avenue.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 26. Media personnel are requested to arrive before 9:45 a.m. for set-up.
