Norfolk's Department of Transportation is making progress on the development of bike lanes on Granby St. As part of the project, residents are invited to attend an in-person community meeting to provide feedback on the preliminary bike and pedestrian designs. The meeting will take place on January 18th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tabernacle Church of Norfolk.
The objective of this project is to repurpose one vehicle lane in each direction into bike lanes along a section of Granby St. The goal is to improve pedestrian crossings and enhance safety along the corridor. The project has been in the works since 2021, with City staff working closely with the community to develop recommended bike lane concepts and identify other pedestrian safety improvements.
In January 2022, City Council voted in favor of accepting SMART Scale funding for the project, which initiated the design phase. The project team has been working diligently to finalize the designs for the bike lanes and pedestrian crossing improvements, with a goal of completing them by Winter 2024.
The community meeting on January 18th will provide an opportunity for residents to review the proposed designs and provide their input. The Department of Transportation is encouraging all interested individuals to attend and share their thoughts.
According to the Department of Transportation, the project webpage at www.norfolk.gov/granbybike contains additional information, including a traffic study and crash analysis. Residents are encouraged to visit the webpage for more details.
