The City of Norfolk in Virginia has announced that it will be hosting its annual ceremony and march to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event will take place on January 15 at 10 a.m. at the Attucks Theatre on Church Street. Colonel David C. Hyman will deliver the keynote address, and there will be performances by Michael Giamille and Elder Ramona Raines & Company. After the ceremony, participants will march to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument on Church Street.
In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the City of Norfolk's offices will be closed on January 15. This includes the closure of libraries, The Slover, Norfolk Animal Care Center, recreation facilities, the Norfolk Courthouse, Commissioner of Revenue, Treasurer's Office, and Norfolk Department of Public Health.
Residents who require bulk waste collection on January 16 are advised to make their requests before 3 p.m. on January 12. Requests can be submitted through the MyNorfolk app, the online portal, or by calling Norfolk Cares at (757) 664-6510.
It is important to note that the SPSA Norfolk Transfer Station on Woodland Ave. will remain open on January 15 from 8 a.m. to noon.
