Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will be observing Transit Equity Day on Monday, February 5, by offering free fare on all bus, light rail, ferry, and paratransit services. This initiative is in honor of the late civil rights activist Rosa Parks, whose birthday falls on February 4.
Rosa Parks, known for her pivotal role in the civil rights movement, made history on December 1, 1955, when she refused to give up her seat in the "colored" section of a bus to a white passenger. Her defiance sparked the Montgomery bus boycott and inspired numerous other initiatives that advanced the cause of civil rights.
To commemorate Rosa Parks' enduring legacy, HRT will be keeping bus headlights on throughout the day. Additionally, a seat will be reserved at the front of all buses with signage honoring her courageous acts.
Transit Equity Day is a National Day of Action that aims to highlight the importance of investing in public transit for the benefit of all citizens. Public transportation plays a crucial role in providing access to quality jobs, education, and essential services. By offering free fare on Transit Equity Day, HRT aims to encourage Hampton Roads residents to experience the convenience of public transit.
This year, Transit Equity Day is one of four free fare days offered by HRT. The other three days include Earth Day in April, Juneteenth in June, and Election Day in November. These initiatives not only promote the use of public transit but also serve as opportunities to raise awareness about important causes.
HRT's decision to offer free fare on Transit Equity Day aligns with Governor's proposed budget, which includes nearly $74 million for Norfolk coastal storm resiliency. This investment demonstrates the commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in the region.
Overall, HRT's observance of Transit Equity Day by providing free fare on all its services is a fitting tribute to Rosa Parks' contributions to public transit and the civil rights movement. It serves as a reminder of the importance of equal access to transportation and the ongoing work towards creating a more equitable society.
