Welcoming Dr. Irwin to Our Ministry

Welcoming Dr. Irwin to Our Ministry

Jeffrey Irwin, MD, recently joined our team in the Hampton Roads market! Luckily, he was familiar with our ministry after completing his residency training with us.

“I loved the mission here, the ability to help others regardless of their ability to pay and the team approach to optimized patient care,” he shares.

Dr. Irwin now practices family medicine at Eagle Harbor Medical Associates.

“I am looking forward to working together with my colleagues in other specialties to provide really high quality, accessible care to my patients,” he says.

He adds that it was his interest in the biochemistry of the body as well as wanting to help people that led him to a career as a physician.

“My pursuit of medicine has always been about merging my scientific interests with my desire to care for others,” Dr. Irwin explains. “Then, I chose primary care as my specialty because they are the only ones that can treat both the whole family and keep their focus on the whole individual.”

He continues, “I love the variety of family medicine and the undifferentiated patient. They are coming to you to figure out what’s wrong and plan a course of action.”

He adds that he has a particular strong interest in helping people control their weight as well as a love for pediatric patients.

As a family medicine physician, Dr. Irwin treats a lot of different conditions.

“Whatever walks through the door, honestly,” he shares. “The whole purpose of primary care is to treat the acute and chronic conditions while also working on injury prevention. If an illness is beyond my scope of knowledge, then I get to help facilitate getting the best doctor for you. Some of the conditions I enjoy treating the most are mental health concerns, weight loss, diabetes and smoking cessation. I also perform several in-office procedures in the setting of primary care such as skin biopsies, joint injections, Nexplanon/IUD placement and laceration repair.”

The most rewarding aspect of Dr. Irwin’s work is the long-term relationships he builds with patients as well as the holistic patient approach in primary care.

“Overall, just helping people become the person that they want to be,” he explains.

And when it comes to challenging times for patients, Dr. Irwin says, “I listen. So many times patients just want to be heard and that is part of the healing process.”

We are so lucky to have Dr. Irwin join our ministry!
