Marlins score five runs against No. 5 Hornets of Lynchburg

The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan fell to the No. 5 ranked Hornets from the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday afternoon in a midweek ODAC match-up at Kenneth R. Perry Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. VWU scored five runs against the Hornets in the 8-2 loss.

GAME RUNDOWN

The Hornets took the early lead scoring a single run in the top of the first inning off an illegal pitch. The Marlins evened the score at one all in the bottom half of the inning, as Jaelen Hines scored on a Connor Hall ground out.

VWU took a one run lead in the bottom of the second as Garrett Lyons hit a sac fly to right that scored Jake Ness.

Lynchburg reclaimed the lead scoring three runs over the next two innings going up by two runs, 4-2, after scoring two runs in the third and one in the fourth.

Neither team scored over the next four innings until the top of the ninth when the Hornets scored four runs to go up 8-2. Virginia Wesleyan answered in the bottom half of the inning with a trio of runs all of which were driven in by hits from Hines, Matt Sinko, and Trent Hanchey. Hines hit a double to left field that scored Zion Ross, while Hines came home on Sinko's single to right. Sam Kasprow scored the final run off Hanchey's single to put the final score at 8-5. 

NEXT UP

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action this Saturday, April 23rd, when they travel to Salem, VA to face the Maroons of Roanoke College in an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 12 PM with game two to begin around or after 3 PM.
