On December 7, 2021, at 7:00 p.m., the MacArthur Memorial and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum will host a virtual event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The event will feature a presentation and Q&A session by historian Walter Borneman. The event is FREE and will take place virtually via Zoom, but registration is required. Walter R. Borneman is the author of nine books about American military and political history, including the bestseller, The Admirals: Nimitz, Halsey, Leahy, and King, which won the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature (2012), and MacArthur at War, World War II in the Pacific, a finalist for the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History (2016). Brothers Down: Pearl Harbor and the Fate of the Many Brothers Aboard the USS Arizona, his story of the thirty-eight sets of brothers on the ship published by Little, Brown in 2019, was recently released in paperback for the 80th anniversary of the attack.
The MacArthur Memorial http://www.macarthurmemorial.org/ is a museum and research center dedicated to preserving and presenting the story of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. In the last fifty years, the museum has also expanded into one of the premier institutions in the United States dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of World War I, World War II, the Occupation of Japan, and the Korean War. To date, the Memorial has served more than five million visitors, scholars, and students. Admission is free.
The Hampton Roads Naval Museum, http://www.hrnm.navy.mil, introduces visitors to over 245 years of U.S. Naval history in Hampton Roads, Virginia. One of ten officially operated U.S. Navy museums reporting to the Naval History and Heritage Command, the museum houses a rich collection of authentic uniforms, weaponry, underwater artifacts, detailed ship models, and artwork. Recently, the naval museum opened a new exhibit, “The Ten Thousand-Day War at Sea: The U.S. Navy in Vietnam.” The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is located on the second level of Nauticus. Admission is free.
