There were 961 Black students enrolled in Southampton County school districts in the 2023-24 school year, 2.5% less than the previous year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

Data showed that Southampton County school districts welcomed 2,523 students during the 2023-24 school year. Among them, Black students comprised 38.1% of the student body to be the second most represented ethnicity in the county’s school districts.

Southampton County Public Schools has a main office in Courtland and is the only school district within Southampton County.

As of November 2023, according to Public School Review, in the 2023-24 school year, Virginia public schools saw an average student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:14, which is better than the national average of 1:15 in public schools.
