ODU sailing teams to compete in three regattas this weekend

Old Dominion University’s sailing teams will participate in three separate competitions beginning April 11. The open team will travel to Annapolis, Maryland for the Truxtun Umstead Open Fleet Race, while the women’s team heads to Alexandria, Virginia for the MAISA Women’s Team Race Championship. Additionally, Old Dominion will host the Grant regatta in Norfolk.

The Truxtun Umstead regatta features eighteen competing schools, including Boston, Coast Guard, Cornell, Eckerd, Fordham, George Washington, Georgetown, Hobart & William Smith, Jacksonville, Miami, Navy, Northeastern and others. Scoring at this event will be divided into two divisions.

At the MAISA Women’s Team Race Championship hosted by Georgetown in Alexandria on Saturday and Sunday, Old Dominion’s women sailors are scheduled for eight races throughout the day. Their opponents include St. Mary’s (Md.), Navy, Hobart & William Smith College, Fordham University and several other institutions.

Meanwhile in Norfolk at ODU’s home waters on April 11-12 for the Grant regatta—also scored across two divisions—the field includes Christopher Newport University; Columbia; Drexel; Hampton; Penn State Behrend; Princeton; Rochester; Rutgers; NY Maritime; Stevens Institute of Technology; Kings Point (U.S. Merchant Marine Academy); Maryland; Virginia; Washington State and William & Mary.

Looking ahead to later in April as their spring season concludes on April 19-20 with participation at the America Trophy hosted by St. Mary’s (Md.), competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
