The Norfolk Arts Commission announced on Apr. 1 that nonprofit arts and cultural organizations serving Norfolk residents can now apply for grants for the fiscal year starting September 1, 2026 and ending August 31, 2027.
These grants aim to support organizations in expanding access to the arts throughout Norfolk, a city with about 235,000 residents according to the official facts page. Funding opportunities include general operating support, project grants, and arts equity funding support. Applications are due by April 13, 2026 at 4:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time; late submissions will not be accepted.
Eligible applicants must be nonprofits that serve Norfolk residents, maintain an active lay Board of Directors, comply with federal anti-discrimination regulations regarding race, color, national origin, disability, age or sex and ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities as outlined in the application process.
Norfolk is home to several prominent cultural institutions such as the Virginia Opera and the Chrysler Museum of Art according to the city’s facts page. The city also features notable landmarks like the USS Wisconsin battleship and Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center for ocean-going vessels according to the city’s facts page.
Norfolk’s government includes a mayor and seven council members who set policy and manage city affairs according to the official government page. The city’s historic seal features imagery of a ship alongside agricultural symbols reflecting its port activity and farming heritage as per the city’s history page. Additionally, Norfolk extends across seven miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline within its total of 144 miles of shoreline according to the official facts page.
