A jury in Norfolk, Virginia, has found Nildaliz Arline Flores-Roman guilty of second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The conviction follows the shooting death of Petty Officer First Class Katrina Ann Anderson on March 16, 2024. The incident occurred after an argument following a night out celebrating Ms. Anderson’s birthday.
Ms. Flores-Roman, her wife, and Ms. Anderson had returned to the Flores-Romans’ apartment after their evening out when an altercation ensued between Ms. Flores-Roman and her wife in the parking lot. As Ms. Anderson intervened in the dispute, she became involved in a physical confrontation with Ms. Flores-Roman.
Following this altercation, all three women entered the apartment where Ms. Flores-Roman retrieved a handgun from the bedroom. As Ms. Anderson attempted to flee toward the front door upon hearing warnings from Ms. Flores-Roman’s wife, she was fatally shot by Ms. Flores-Roman through her back and chest.
Ms. Anderson collapsed outside the apartment where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after emergency services arrived on scene following a call made by Ms. Flores-Roman’s wife.
The court heard that there had been prior emotional abuse within Ms. Flores-Roman’s marriage which prompted interventions from Ms. Anderson as both friend and coworker to help counsel through these issues.
During her trial, which concluded on June 17 with deliberations lasting just 20 minutes, Judge Everett A. Martin Jr., presided over proceedings leading to the jury’s decision to convict as charged.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi commented: “Ms. Flores-Roman shot and killed a fellow sailor for intervening in Ms. Flores-Roman’s assault of her wife,” adding appreciation for both the verdict reached by jurors and cooperation from surviving witnesses ensuring accountability for actions taken during this tragic event.
