Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is organizing two Student Freedom Pass Palooza events to help students in the region access free transportation for the upcoming school year. The events are scheduled for August 7 at Hampton High School and August 9 at the YMCA on Granby Street in Norfolk, both from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Student Freedom Pass is available at no cost to riders aged 13-17 living in Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach. It allows unlimited rides on HRT buses, ferries, and light rail services.
At these events, students can sign up for a pass and learn how to plan their trips using current transit technology. Members of HRT’s newly formed Student Transit Riders Commission will also be present to meet with attendees. The commission consists of high school students from HRT’s service area who meet monthly to share their perspectives on transit issues affecting youth.
“The Student Freedom Pass from HRT is growing in popularity because it introduces teens to transit, educates them on how to get around, and provides them with safe and efficient transportation throughout the school year,” said William E. Harrell, HRT’s President and CEO.
Students unable to attend the events can still obtain a Student Freedom Pass by completing an application and visiting one of HRT’s transit centers in Norfolk, Hampton, or Newport News.
Hampton Roads Transit aims to provide reliable, safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions for the region. More information about services can be found at gohrt.com.
