Lucia LaRocca-Taylor, originally from Italy, has found a new home in Chesapeake, Virginia. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I never would’ve imagined my life would lead me here, to this particular City. But I’m so grateful that it did.” Her American experience began as a young adult navigating the complexities of a new culture and language. “Assimilating wasn’t always easy,” she noted, but kindness from others helped her succeed.

Starting in the City of Chesapeake’s Finance Department in 2000, Lucia soon moved to Human Resources. This shift ignited her passion for helping people. Now serving as the City’s Talent Acquisition Supervisor, she emphasizes the importance of connecting individuals with opportunities. “To me, this is about more than matching people to jobs,” she said.

Lucia’s team works hard to ensure diversity within the City’s workforce by reaching out to varied talent pools, including military families. She actively participates in the Military Spouse Employment Network to support service members’ spouses facing unique challenges. “Helping them find purpose and stability here in Chesapeake is fulfilling,” she stated.

The trust and freedom granted by City leadership enable Lucia to lead effectively. She highlighted that their CARES standards are practiced daily: “This is not just something we talk about. We walk the walk.”

For Lucia, seeing familiar names join orientation signifies success: “Because I know they’re not just joining a workplace – they’re joining a family.” Her journey from Italy to Chesapeake embodies growth and giving back. “I’ve been given so many opportunities,” she says, expressing joy in opening doors for others.

Lucia remains an essential asset for Chesapeake’s workforce and exemplifies the kindness that made this city her home.
