Chesapeake Public Schools has announced the activation of all school zone speed cameras starting September 2, urging the community to reduce speed and remain vigilant in school zones.
According to the Chesapeake Police Department, the first school zone speed camera on Kempsville Road is now operational for Greenbrier Christian Academy’s academic year. The remaining cameras will become active with the commencement of Chesapeake Public Schools on September 2. Warning signs have been installed at each location, and a comprehensive list of active cameras is accessible online.
Potential violations recorded by these cameras are reviewed individually by a Chesapeake Police Officer before any citation is issued. Citations can be paid online or via mail, and inquiries should be directed to the PhotoSafe office. The police department emphasizes the importance of slowing down and staying alert to ensure student safety.
Chesapeake Public Schools collaborates with BusPatrol to equip its fleet of over 500 buses with automated photo enforcement technology aimed at addressing illegal school bus passings. Drivers are required to stop for buses displaying red flashing lights or extended stop signs while children board or exit. Virginia law mandates stopping in both directions on two-lane roads, except for divided highways. Yellow flashing lights indicate that a bus is preparing to stop, prompting drivers to slow down. Violations captured by photo enforcement incur a first-time fine of $250.
Established in 1963 through the merger of Norfolk County and South Norfolk city, Chesapeake Public Schools serves over 39,000 students across 45 schools, three centers, and specialized facilities. The division offers Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), dual-enrollment programs, and specialized academies in science, medicine, and STEM fields alongside comprehensive arts and athletic programs. Governed by a nine-member elected School Board, it implements a tiered instructional model with targeted intervention periods. Under Superintendent Dr. Jared A. Cotton’s Empower 2025 plan, the district focuses on exemplary instruction, staff support, safe environments, and community engagement while achieving high graduation rates statewide.
